Galvanize Sheffield
Sheffield, England
25 March - 24 April 2011
Sheffield is a city synonymous with steel and the metal trades. Famed for its production of steel, for the heavy engineering that shaped the world and its fine cutlery, it is a city of endeavour, creativity and craftsmanship. Metal skills can still be seen in our thriving community of silversmiths and designers, some of the best in the UK, who create beautiful and innovative contemporary designs in metal. Galvanize Sheffield celebrates their work and the dynamic development of industry and research in the city.
Galvanize aims to spark new interest in contemporary metal design and shed new light on innovations in the manufacturing of metal products in the city. Now in its 4th year, Galvanize 2011 will show the best in contemporary metal with a range of exhibitions and events taking place in venues across the city and beyond.
Galvanize is a celebration of the past and present in all things metal, moreover it is an affirmation that investing in skills and innovation in making beautiful treasures, practical tools and powerful products is at the heart of our future.
Visitors to Galvanize 2011 will see fabulous work from rising stars and established designers, handcrafted in precious and non-precious metals, ranging from jewellery and home-ware to contemporary ecclesiastical pieces, in a variety of settings: galleries, factories, outdoors and in unexpected places! There will also be the chance to purchase or commission your own works at: ‘meet the maker' events; try your hand at making metal products and join in behind the scenes factory and studio tours.
