Rich Maynard produces contemporary metal sculpture, site-specific public art, and architectural installations from his historic forge in East Hertfordshire. With an academic background from Cambridge University and the Royal College of Art, his work sits at the intersection of traditional blacksmithing, modern parametric CAD modeling, and precision fabrication. Rich’s public art practice explores narrative-driven forms that reflect local history, environmental metrics, and structural geometry. Utilizing resilient materials like Corten steel, heavy timber, and patinated metals, his installations range from expressive calligraphic sculptures to functional public realm interventions and landmark community pieces. Passionate about keeping the craft accessible, Rich also opens Much Hadham Forge to the public through hands-on blacksmithing experience days and workshops, guiding beginners and enthusiasts alike through the fundamentals of traditional hot forging and metal shaping.

Northey Island Jetty

Set in the Essex salt marshes, the Northey Island jetty is a durable public pathway crafted from heavy oak, marine-grade metalwork, and traditional timber joinery. Engineered to endure tidal flooding and natural weathering, it blends CNC-engraved details with traditional craftsmanship to reflect the nature reserve's ecology and history.

Stanway Totem

Engineered and detail-modeled in CAD by Rich Maynard, the five-metre Stanway Totem sculpture stands at Colchester's Lakelands Community Centre. Created alongside lead artist Sara Hayes, the piece features a heavy internal steel framework wrapped in a 3mm Corten steel skin, precision laser-cut with local flora, fauna, and historical motifs. Fully forged with a custom base plate and integrated uplighting, it serves as a durable, lit focal point for the community.

The Same Moon

Created for the Light Up Ramsgate trail, The Same Moon is an illuminated geodesic dome designed and modeled in Autodesk Fusion by Rich Maynard. It pairs a laser-cut poplar plywood frame with flexible, 0.5mm polypropylene panels and diffusion layers, casting a soft internal glow inspired by lunar forms and global traditions.
