BABA AGM 2008
A ‘must-do’ date for your diary:
The next BABA AGM will be held at the Weald and Downland Open Air Museum, Singleton, West Sussex: Friday 1st August to Sunday 3rd August 2008.

For a preview of the museum go to their web site and take the virtual tour. The setting for the museum village is the beautiful Lavant valley in the South Downs. The site comprises mature woodland and open parkland that is part of the famous West Dean Estate, now the West Dean College, an internationally renowned college of Arts and Crafts, set up by the late Edward James, patron of the Arts. Located down the Trundle Hill from Goodwood Race Course, House, Motor Circuit and Aerodrome. It is Old England at its finest, and a visit at any time lifts the spirit and gladdens the heart. www.wealddown.co.uk .

There is convenient on-site camping…a marquee for food and bopping to a samba band; who will be doing some workshops for anyone interested.

Ironbridge AGM was always going to be a hard act to follow, HOWEVER we can and will have a fantastic time at The Weald and Downland Museum.

For your entertainment we have organised three very excellent demonstrators….
Traditional blacksmiths - Bogdan Popov from the Kiev Folk Museum and our own Hector Cole, internationally renowned blacksmith, plus Bladesmith Owen Bush. (www.owenbush.co.uk).
We are also planning a charcoal burn and a hog roast (sorry vegetarians and vegans) plus of course the usual Beer Tent, BABA Books and Trade Stands.

The museum is very family orientated but has something for everyone.  There will be opportunities to sell your work at the AGM, as there will be a gallery of members work located in the fantastic award winning 'Grid Shell Building'. This will be a real chance to get known, so make something now!
The whole event is open to the public and is being well publicised and it is located in a very wealthy area.  It will be an affordable fun weekend for the whole family that will give us all the chance to unwind. So come along to the Forge-in at the 2008 AGM and help us create more interesting and iconic pieces for the newly re-developed woodland area at the museum. The idea is that we create Wayside Markers that relate to the many tree varieties in the woods and associated woodland crafts. The markers will be located alongside the many woodland walks and will help children and adults to appreciate and have a greater understanding of their surroundings. Individual teams of smiths will undertake the design and decoration of each of the many the posts.

Hereford Tech 1988:
“September next year is 20 years since 22 people went to Hereford Technical College to try and learn something about blacksmithing. 20 years! (Some of us still haven't learnt anything about blacksmithing.....) In case anyone is wondering about why it was 22 people it was because they only had 11 forges; so two groups of 11 students.

Could ANYONE who has ANY contact info for any of the then students pass the information on to Steve Anderson, 07813 602461 or preferably by email (so I don't lose the details)”

PROOF READER’S NOTE:
This isn’t the Crafts Council-sponsored Chelsea Crafts Fair that has now moved from Chelsea Town Hall to Somerset House as ‘Origin: The London Craft Fair’, but it would be a unique opportunity to bring our work before a London audience, at a very popular and established Crafts exhibition venue. http://www.designercraftsatchelsea.org.uk/

Is there anyone interested in organising participation in this for BABA?

Bethan – could we use the AGM “Playing with Fire” exhibition in July as the basis and trial run for something similar at Chelsea in October??
